There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check the indicator light, note the model number, and verify that the unit has power at the breaker. What you should not do: remove the lamp housing while power is live, attempt to bypass the ballast with a generic part, or reach into the plenum without confirming the HVAC fan is locked out. UV-C lamps run at 800-1,200 volts and cause serious arc burns; the quartz tube also contains mercury vapor, so a dropped lamp is a hazmat situation.
